   Our Democracy

News Literacy, Community Engagement, Visual Exploration

Americans are passionate about democracy. Many would die for it. And yet definitions vary widely.

Right now, the U.S. is polarized. Distrust and misunderstandings are growing. This project is designed to empower the people to tell their story, bridge America’s divide and create a better understanding of the media.

Our Democracy is a collaborative multimedia project about how Americans see democracy and the responsibility of citizenship. It's meant to push people to look beyond politics, examine the social conditions that underpin our society and provide a visual record of the state of local democracy at this moment in U.S. history.

The project started immediately after the U.S. Presidential elections and moves to a different community each month, asking, what does democracy look like?

Our Democracy is sponsored by CatchLight, PhotoWings and the National Geographic Society.
